CEDAR CITY — Cedar Valley Community Theatre will present the energetic 1980s throwback, “The Wedding Singer: The Musical,” opening Jan. 29 and running through Feb. 8, some dates excepted, at the Heritage Center Theater in Cedar City.
“We’re taking Cedar City back to 1985 with all of the fun fashion and iconic sounds of that era,” Wagner said. “We’re so excited to share this production with you, and we just can’t hide it!”
This hit romantic comedy is based on the 1998 Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore film and received rave reviews on Broadway, earning five Tony award nominations.
Featuring a pop/rock score, “The Wedding Singer” offers a hilarious look at 1985 when hair was big and hearts bigger.
“Many people don’t realize that the hit movie was made into a musical,” Director Stephen Wagner said. “’The Wedding Singer’ is sweet, charming, hysterically funny and has one of the most entertaining Broadway scores of the past 10 years. The music is awesome, and we have an incredibly talented live orchestra rocking it out every night with New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer, Robbie Hart.”
The show’s storyline is set in 1985 with rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart as the life of the party, until, that is, his own fiancée leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. Enter Julia, a winsome waitress who wins his affection. As luck would have it, Julia is about to marry a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.
“The Wedding Singer” has been rated PG-13 by Music Theatre International and does feature some mature language and content.
Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 29 and 30, Feb. 1, 5, 6 and 8. Seating is general admission with tickets priced at $12 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. For more information, visit the Cedar Valley Community Theatre website.
