ST. GEORGE —  After winning the Battle of the Bell on Thursday, Cedar High’s wrestlers, well, they rang it. Joyously. With gusto.

There were team pictures after the match, too.

bellIn 1984, the coaches at Cedar and Dixie got a railroad bell, mounted it in a box and a traveling trophy was born. According to Dixie’s announcer, Cedar now has an 18-15 edge in the rivalry. Since the trophy was created, that is. The two schools are among the oldest in southern Utah and have been competing in several sports since the early part of the 20th century. But the Battle of the Bell is just over 30 years old.

“Jade Bulloch at 182 won his first varsity match,” Cedar coach Luke Payne noted. “And McCrae Murray was in control throughout his match at 195. The whole team looked good. Our kids showed up to wrestle tonight.”

Dixie coach Jarad Carson said the night’s results were tough to swallow.

“It’s always disappointing to lose, but Cedar wrestled a great match,” he said.

Things started quickly for the Redmen as Dyllon Arenivar broke away from a 4-4 deadlock to score a pin with 1:27 remaining in the third period at 106 pounds. Dustin Barrick followed at 113-pounds with a pin with 1:16 left in the first period and the Redmen were on their way.

Dixie got its first win at 138 pounds when Hobbs Nyberg pinned Tyson Roundy with 35 seconds left in the second period. Jason Longmore used an escape and a near-fall to record a 4-0 decision over Cole Maxedon for the Flyers other win.

In another region match, Hurricane defeated Snow Canyon 55-19. Christian Case, Trent Wilson, Dane Bulloch, Tanner Nelson, Chris Stoddard and Rhett Boatright all came away with pins for the victorious Warriors.
