About 8:15 a.m. a Ford passenger car was traveling south on River Road approaching 700 South, St. George Police Sgt. Rich Triplett said. A red Volkswagen sedan headed north on River Road started to turn left onto 700 South in front of the Ford, causing the Ford to collide with the Volkswagen on the passenger side.

Both drivers claimed they had the right of way, Triplett said. The Ford driver claimed he had a green light while the Volkswagen driver claimed he had a green arrow.

“At this time we don’t have any witnesses to verify whose story is correct about who had the green light,”  Triplett said, “At this time, no citations are going to be issued until we can either get some witnesses or verify who actually had the right of way.”

An elderly female passenger in the Volkswagen was injured when the airbag struck her, Triplett said, complaining of pain in her chest. She was taken by Gold Cross Ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George.

No other injuries were reported.

Traffic was impacted for about 30 minutes due to the intersection being blocked.

Units from the St. George Police Department, the St. George Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the accident.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
