Girls basketball: SC, Cedar still favorites as Region 9 play begins tonight

ST. GEORGE – The preseason is over and Region 9 girls basketball play commences tonight. Two teams squarely stand out from the pack and those two, Snow Canyon and Cedar, will meet at SCHS to get things started.

Snow Canyon sports the best record. The Lady Warriors are 11-1 with quality wins against Juan Diego and Pleasant Grove. The Lady Warriors sole loss came against a weaker Juab team. They have had a much weaker strength of schedule (42.9) than the team right behind them, Cedar.

The Lady Reds come in at 9-3. But their losses are against three teams with a combined record of 38-4, including nationally-ranked Centennial out of Nevada. Quality wins include Richfield, Juan Diego and the only blemish on Panguitch’s record.

Both Snow Canyon and Cedar have point differentials in double figures. Currently sitting at third is Pine View. The Lady Panthers have gone a remarkable 8-3 without their top two point guards. Pine View has quality wins against Bryce Valley and Stansbury.

Hurricane has surprised many in the early part of the season with a record of 6-6. Without the offensive firepower, the Lady Tigers have had to rely on their defense. They currently hold their opponents at a region best 38.8 ppg. They also beat the Lady Wildcats (Richfield).

Desert Hills has played many of their early season contests against teams from Nevada. The travel may have had an effect as the Lady Thunder come in at 5-6. They have the second-best scoring average, but also give up the second most points in the region. They beat Stansbury at the Tooele County Classic.

Dixie has struggled out of the gate at 2-9. Coming into the season with little experience, Coach Jaime Araiza’s squad is getting a baptism by fire. Dixie outplayed a good Moapa Valley squad earlier for their first win.
