LAS VEGAS — A year ago, Dixie played Bishop Gorman’s junior varsity squad and put a hurting on the national powerhouse’s younger team. This year, the private Catholic high school from just outside Las Vegas brought in the big boys and got a little revenge.
The Gaels put on a clinic Saturday in an afternoon meeting, rushing out to a 16-point first-quarter lead and a 32-point advantage after three quarters before settling for a 71-52 win over the Flyers.
Tyler Bennett had 17 first-half points, but the Dixie squad was no match for a Bishop Gorman team with at least four Division I commits, including future Gonzaga Bulldog Zach Collins. The Gaels center just missed a triple-double with 17 rebounds, eight blocked shots and eight points.
Christian Popoola led all scorers with 24 points, though Bennett was nearly as good with 22 for Dixie. Malachi Otis added 10 more the Flyers, who fell to 10-3 on the season.
Bishop Gorman, 11-4, made nine 3-pointers in the game. Dixie had just one trey by Bennett.
The Flyers open region play Wednesday against Pine View at the Hangar.
Parowan 56, Hurricane 55 (OT)
Playing once again with out star post Reagan Hinton, Hurricane overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to force the extra period.
But Parowan’s Brett Hunter made a pair of free throws with 1:53 left to give the Rams the lead and the Tigers had five different chances in the final couple of minutes to get the lead back, but missed them all.
The Tigers had taken a 55-54 lead earlier in the overtime on a tough drive inside by Kirt McDaniel. Hurricane also led with under two minutes to go in regulation after a bucket by Riley Ballard made it 52-50. But PHS’s Jeffery Hamilton hit a shot with 43 seconds left that tied the game at 52. A 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark by McDaniel,
The Tigers, who got 16 from McDaniel and 15 from Ballard, fall to 7-6 on the season heading into their Region 9 opener Wednesday at Desert Hills. Parowan, 6-5, was led by Brenen Rowley’s 20 points.
