ST. GEORGE — Teenagers smoking at the St. George Skate Park Wednesday attracted the attention of police, who arrested seven students for drug use.

During Dixie Middle School’s lunch hour Wednesday, School Resource Officer Matt Schuman was patrolling the area around the school, St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said, when he noticed a group of students who were acting suspiciously at the skate park next to J. C. Snow Park.

“He went down to the skate park to investigate that,” said Despain, “and there were seven students who were engaged in smoking marijuana. Now, this was not on school property, it was down at the skate park.”

Six students were referred to juvenile court for marijuana charges and tobacco use, and the seventh student, who Despain said supplied the marijuana, was taken to detention on the same charges.

The students were between the ages of 14 and 15 years old, Despain said.

Juveniles involved in this incident as victims, accused, witnesses or otherwise are not named in light of privacy considerations. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
