Hugh Evans Blanton, 92, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016. Hugh was born Sept. 8, 1923, in Spindale, North Carolina, to Edna Connor Blanton and Hugh Evans Blanton, Sr. He graduated from Fort Mill High School in South Carolina.

He played for the Amarillo Gold Sox from 1956 to 1958. Hugh retired from Pantex in 1985. Hugh enjoyed spending time with his golfing buddies and family. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mavis Player; his first wife, Martha Smith Blanton; and a daughter, Bobbie Blanton.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Patricia Overbey Blanton; three sons, Hugh Blanton and wife Linda of Johnson City, Tennessee, Chuck Blanton and wife Peggy of Amarillo and Jerry and wife Mary Blanton of Amarillo; three stepdaughters, Phyllis McElduff of Dumas, Mary Jean Larkan and husband Kenny of Amarillo and Gail Spurgeon and husband Rob of Dallas; a stepson, Bill McElduff, Jr. and wife Luann of Houston; grandchildren, Amanda Lewis Stephens, Kara Larkan Skinner, Natalie Lewis, Kelly Larkan, Bennett Blanton, Maddison McElduff and Sara Blanton; and two great-grandchildren, Aidan and Sophie Skinner.

Funeral services

  • The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the funeral home.
  • Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Jan. 7, at Llano Cemetery, Amarillo, Texas, with Bruce Smith, pastor of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Autism Speaks online. Friends and family are invited to sign the online guestbook.

Arrangements have been made by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd., Amarillo, Texas.
