2 taken to hospital after SUV rolls multiple times on interstate

TOQUERVILLE — A man and woman in their 70s were taken to the hospital after their SUV rolled multiple times on southbound Interstate 15 Monday night.

Units of the Utah Highway Patrol and Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a single-vehicle rollover near milepost 28 on southbound I-15 around 7:10 p.m.

They found a 1996 Ford Explorer that had rolled several times, with the 74-year-old male driver and a 72-year-old female passenger still inside the vehicle, UHP Trooper Joe Pastor said.

The woman received what appeared to be serious injuries to her head and legs, Pastor said, while the man appeared to be in fair condition. The full extent of their condition was not known at the time.

Witnesses who spoke to UHP troopers at the scene said they saw the 1996 Ford Explorer begin to drift to the left shoulder and go onto the median for about 75 feet before the driver over-corrected back onto the interstate.

At that point, the Ford rolled several times across both southbound lanes of traffic and finally came to a rest on its wheels on the left-hand shoulder facing north, Pastor said.

The contents of the Ford were scattered across parts of the roadway and the shoulder. Pastor said the man and woman would have likely ended up the same way if they had not been wearing seat belts.

“Obviously, with sustaining the damage it did in the roll, seat belts more than likely saved their lives,” he said.

Speed is not considered a factor in the accident, nor are drugs or alcohol, Pastor said, though fatigue might have played a role. The accident itself is still under investigation.

Units of the Hurricane Valley Fire District and Leeds Area Fire and Ambulance also responded to the scene.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

I was gonna gonna make a joke about preferring crescent rolls over suv rolls, but then I saw their age, and my mind automatically said, ouch that must have hurt. I’m not insensitive to the pains of aging, I can’t imagine me being 30 years older and rolling over, especially in a vehicle.
