RICHFIELD – In one of the busiest nights of the year for girls basketball, Region 9 teams managed a .500 kind of a night Friday in tournaments around the region. Here’s a recap:
Delta 52, Cedar 50
The Lady Reds lost a heartbreaker to the Rabbits in the opening game of the 2A-3A Preview.
Delta’s lead incrementally increased to three points at the end of the third before staving off Cedar in the fourth. Courtney Morley led Cedar with 15 points. Dream Weaver and Morgan Myers scored nine and eight points, respectively.
Delta improved to 7-1. Cedar fell to 4-3. The Lady Reds will play their next game Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Richfield. They will square off against Juan Diego.
South Sevier 39, Hurricane 34
Hurricane was the other team representing Region 9 at the 2A-3A Preview. The Lady Tigers fell to South Sevier after falling behind early.
Morgan Huntsman led Hurricane with 12 points. Jayden Langford and Carrie Marshall scored six and five points, respectively. South Sevier improved to 3-4. With the loss, Hurricane drops to 4-4. The Lady Tigers will play Delta Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m.
Stansbury 50, Desert Hills 41
In the Tooele County Classic, the Lady Thunder overcame a huge first-quarter deficit, only to fall behind once again in the third quarter. The Lady Stallions had a commanding lead, 18-5, after the first. The Thunder turned the tables in the second quarter, but still trailed 28-26.
Ashley Beckstrand led all scorers with 21 points. Kylie Williams scored eight. Jessica Mathis and Ellie Williams pulled down nine and six rebounds. Beckstrand also contributed five steals.
Stansbury improves to 4-3 while the Thunder drop to 3-5. The Thunder will play two games Saturday. The morning game at 10:30 will come against Tooele. At 1:30 p.m., Desert Hills laces up again for a game against Cyprus.
Snow Canyon 41, Tooele 30
The Lady Warriors continue to impress in the early season beating, the host school at the Tooele County Classic.
Madison Mooring had 16 points, three assists and three steals to lead the Warriors. Nikenna Durante scored six. Sydney Bott and Shaylee Reed scored five apiece. Reed also led with six rebounds.
The Lady Buffaloes fall to 2-6. The Lady Warriors now sport a 7-0 record. They will play Stansbury Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m.
Dixie 54, SECTA 34
Dixie gets into the win column for the first time this season with a thorough win against South East Career Tech Academy (Nev.) in the Virgin Valley tournament held in Mesquite.
Kelsea Barker led all scorers with 22 points. Joining her in double-figures was Lexie Paxton with 11. Taylor Whitson and Dantzel Miner scored eight and six, respectively.
The Lady Flyers improve to 1-5 while SECTA drops to 0-6. Dixie will play again at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon against Virgin Valley High School.
Pine View 51, Cyprus 24
The Lady Panthers stifled Cyprus with suffocating defense, allowing only 11 points through the first three quarters at the Tooele County Classic.
Individually, Tayvia Ah Quin and Breana Moeai scored in double-figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Both players only played half of the game. Ah Quin also pulled down 11 rebounds.
Cyprus falls to 1-7. Pine View improves to 4-2. The Panthers will play two games Saturday. The morning game at 10:30 will pit the Lady Panthers against Grantsville. Pine View will play Stansbury at 3 p.m.
