Truck rolls several times before disappearing into deep ravine

SANTA CLARA — A pickup truck veered off the road Saturday when the driver lost control and, after rolling several times, landed upside down in a ravine so deep that it required a multi-agency search to finally locate the vehicle.

Just after 8:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to Pioneer Parkway near Rachel Drive in Santa Clara on a reported rollover. The pickup truck was eventually located down a steep embankment off the left-hand side of the road after an extended search, Ivins-Santa Clara Public Safety Officer Chad Holt said.

The driver, a 39-year old man, called dispatch from his residence reporting that his Chevy pickup truck was at the bottom of an embankment on Pioneer Parkway, Holt said.

The driver told police he veered off the roadway while traveling west on Pioneer Parkway and his pickup rolled several times before landing upside down at the bottom of the ravine, facing north.

At that point, the man said he crawled out of the overturned truck and walked to his residence where he called police, Holt said.

The driver sustained minor injuries but declined medical transport to the hospital.

The truck was totaled during the rollover and had to be towed from the scene, Holt said. Two tow trucks using a winch were required to lift the pickup out of the deep embankment.

The man was issued a citation for failure to maintain lane, Holt said. The incident is still under investigation.

Ivins-Santa Clara Public Safety, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol, Santa Clara Fire Department and Ivins City Ambulance responded to the scene.

“So many agencies responded to help with the search for the vehicle,” Holt said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

The driver would have been better off by just saying the truck was stolen and he later saw it rolling off the road. Someone else deserved the ticket. (honest to Betsey)
