July 19, 1938 – November 4, 2015
Medora Eyre Nelson passed away November 4, 2015, at home in the care of Julius Loren Nelson, her husband and Sun Tree Hospice. Many family and friends in recent years provided most loving kind and Christ like support since her diagnosis of genetic spinocerebellum disease (loss of motor skills). She carried on with great determination to the very end.
She, Loren and family particularly thank all who were so helpful to her recently and also throughout her life. Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and The Holy Ghost blessed her abundantly according to promises by prophets, past and also by prophets, seers and revelators today. Medora had a testimony of the reality of spiritual matters through her daily living.
Her focus was on trying to follow our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her efforts’ have and will continue to be rewarded. She expects to have her family, children and all posterity forever, along with friends in God’s covenants.
She was born July 19, 1938, in Lyman, Wyoming, to Maxine Bracken and Jesse Guymon Eyre, who preceded her in death. She was the only daughter in their family with Robert Guy “Bobby”, Florin Dana “Danny” and Jesse Jay who survive her. They enjoyed life together on the Eyre Homestead (dairy farm) with the big green barn at the Urie Corner.
Medora was active with each family member in all work on the farm and in their home. She grew to be a strong, competitive and willing worker which served her well with her own family. She attended Lyman High School – enjoying being a cheerleader and participating in as many physical activities as possible even though girl sports were not a real thing. She let people know that she could out run the boys and by her example she challenged everyone to have a strong work ethic.
She attended the University of Wyoming, majoring in elementary education. She met Loren her junior year and they were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They enjoyed nearly 57 years together.
Medora was a dedicated and wonderful mother to 14 children: Jay (Gloria), Glena (Chris) Meng, Richard (Lynne), Eric (Katherine), Julie (Mike) Gilpin, Christina (Gordon) Woolsey, Laurie (Rob) Rushton, Sherri (Nathan) Tate, Maxine (Erica), Stella (Randy) Johnson, Holly (Chris) Rains, David (Rolayne), Sara (Jeremy) Vest and John (Jessica). She was preceded in death by her parents and granddaughter, Brooke Lauren Vest.
She dedicated her life to her large family, 80 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as a primary worker, visiting teacher, YM/YW teacher, YW and Relief Society President. She was a companion to Loren on two Humanitarian missions, 18 months in Belarus and nearly two years in Mongolia.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed her book club. She was also an avid JAZZ fan and loved watching all their games. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Medora gives a special thanks to all the ladies who helped her so much with her wheel walker. It was hard for her to bear the change to a wheel chair but she endured with patience and gratitude to God and Jesus Christ to the end of her earthly life. Loren learned from her companionship which will continue.
Funeral Services
- Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Red Cliffs LDS 3rd Ward Chapel, 1285 North Bluff Street, St. George.
- Visitations will be held Sunday, Nov. 8, from 6-8 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd, and Monday, 9 a.m. at the chapel.
- Interment will be in Tonaquint Cemetery, 1777 South Dixie Dr., St. George.
