ST. GEORGE – The occasional sound of mysterious booms heard around St. George and the surrounding area tends to be blamed on air exercises originating out of Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. That isn’t the case with booms heard this week, though, as the Utah Bomb Squad Task Force has been conducting training at the Ridge Top Complex in St. George.
Both the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Marc Mortensen, assistant to the city manager of St. George, confirmed the bomb squad exercises are the source of the booms being heard by concerned citizens throughout the area.
According to an email sent by the Sheriff’s Office to city officials notifying them of the event, the exercise involves 30 bomb technicians from across the state. The event is a three-day exercise and started Tuesday.
