Mary Lou Wells Schmutz, age 96, passed away October 31, 2015, at her home in St. George, Utah. She was born Mary Louisa Wells to Samuel Henry Wells and Mary Louisa Woolley on July 14, 1919, in St. Thomas, Nevada.
In the fall of 1938 she reluctantly came to Dixie Junior College because her mother felt she was too young to go so far away as Reno. At Dixie she met the love of her life, Ray Snow Schmutz. They were married October 21, 1941, in the St. George Temple. They are the parents of seven children.
Mary Lou served all her life in the organizations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was known for her loving kindness, untiring service, and her devout testimony. Two of her pleasures were singing in choral groups and playing the organ in the temple.
Mary Lou thought of herself as less than ordinary; we, her children knew her as extraordinary. She will forever be an example of righteousness and an inspiration to her children and grandchildren for generations.
She is survived by Janet Bice, Dianne Dean (Lynn), John Douglas Schmutz (Larita), Darlene Allred (Mark), Samuel Wells Schmutz, and Dannielle Henninger (Bryan); 39 grandchildren and 86 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, and a son Sidney Wells Schmutz.
Funeral Services
- Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, 11 a.m. in the St. George 5th Ward Chapel, 85 S. 400 East, St. George.
- There will be a viewing Friday, Nov. 6, 6-7 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street, St. George, and also Saturday, 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the chapel.
- Interment will take place in the St. George City Cemetery.
