Dixie’s Adopt-a-Paws: H.A.R.T. of Utah

FEATURE – Not ready for the full commitment of adopting a dog, but still looking to help in a big way?

Fostering might be the path for you! H.A.R.T., Homeless Animals Rescue Team, is a nonprofit organization that has been in operation since 2009. Its purpose is to find forever homes for animals and reduce rates of euthanasia by working with both local shelters and nonlocal shelters.

H.A.R.T.’s co-founder Cathy Freitas brought two volunteers to meet us as well as three beautiful dogs!

H.A.R.T. matches dogs to volunteers who can foster them until they are adopted, as well as coordinating direct adoptions. Puppies six months or younger are $150 for adoption and adult dogs are $125.

“That helps us recoup some of our vet fees,” Freitas said. “All of our dogs are spayed and neutered, current on vaccinations and microchipped.”

The adoption fees include any extra costs like dental and stay the same regardless of excess needs the dogs may have.

The cost to foster is free, as all expenses related to fostering are covered by the organization.

Money donations to H.A.R.T. are always needed and are 100 percent tax deductible, Freitas said.
