Region 9 sports action was hot and fast over the last couple of days. Here’s a roundup of the results:
GIRLS TENNIS
Madz Eames was a surprise last season when she emerged as a No. 3 seed and advanced all the way to the state finals. The Desert Hills senior is no surprise this season. The Region 9 champ is hoping to take that one extra step and win it all in 2015.
She is halfway there after the first day of the 3A State Tournament at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. Eames beat North Sanpete’s Caitlyn Miller 6-0, 6-3 in the first round, then advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Kayla Johnson of Grantsville.
Pine View’s Hattie Erekson also made it to the semis with wins over Olivia Durbin of Juab (6-1, 6-1) and Kayla Hugle of Logan (7-5, 6-1). Hugle came into the first singles competition with an 8-0 record and as the top seed from Region 11.
Saturday, Eames will play Sydney Nichols of Bear River in one semi — Nichols upset Region 12 No. 1 seed Emily Sorensen of Richfield — and Erekson will battle Livi Rockwood of Park City in the other semi. Rockwood, a freshman, is the No. 1 seed from Region 10.
The Miners are leading the team scoring with 10 points, one ahead of Grantsville and three ahead of Desert Hills. Logan and Pine View are tied for fourth with six points each.
Snow Canyon junior Brielle Nielsen is in the semifinals, along with Pine View’s Lily Hemenway, at second singles.
All four Region 9 netters were ousted before the semifinals at third singles and the same goes for first doubles.
At second doubles, the Desert Hills duo of sophomore Abbie Carmack and freshman Lyndsi Graf are in the semifinals and Hurricane’s sophomore team of Holland Steglich and Candice Gubler are also in the semis after beating a No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals.
The tournament continues through the day Saturday, with the champions being crowned early Saturday evening.

SOCCER
Cedar beat Pine View 2-1 Thursday, essentially locking everyone into place for the postseason.
With the win, the Lady Reds, 11-5-0 and 7-3-0, clinch the No. 2-seed behind region champion Desert Hills. The Thunder, 9-5-2 and 7-2-1 in region, finish with 22 points after a loss Friday to Snow Canyon. Cedar ends up with 21 points and the Warriors, 6-2-2, finish third with 20 points.
Pine View, 4-4-2 in region, is locked into fourth place with 14 points, while Dixie and Hurricane end up fifth and sixth. Dixie beat Hurricane 3-0 Thursday with Mashaun Estridge recording a shutout and Jenna McNary, Elizabeth Erickson and Starlee Woodbury all scoring goals.
That means the first round of the playoffs are set, with Desert Hills and Cedar staying home for first-round games and Snow Canyon and Pine View hitting the road.
The Lady Thunder will host 3-10-1 Richfield, while the Lady Reds will entertain 4-6-3 Juab. The Lady Warriors travel to 6-10-0 North Sanpete and Pine View will face a familiar foe, visiting Region 12 champ (and former Region 9 rival) Canyon View, which is 9-6-1 and the top seed from Region 12. The Falcons played five of Region 9’s six teams, going 0-4-1. PV beat CV 2-1 in early September.
All first round games are Wednesday at 4 p.m. The second round will be played Saturday at 1 p.m. at the higher seeds’ fields.
VOLLEYBALL
The Snow Canyon Warriors swept the Bingham Miners in straight sets in non-region volleyball action Friday night, 25-19, 25-12, 25-20. Crash Parker had 27 kills, 24 digs and four service aces to pace the Warriors. Snow Canyon improves to 11-2 overall and still sits atop the Region 9 standings with an undefeated 7-0 record.
The Cedar volleyball team got its first win in region play with a five set match against the Hurricane Tigers Thursday. Hurricane took the first two sets, 25-20, 25-23. But the lady Reds fought back to win the next three 25-17, 25-19, 15-12.
Individually for Cedar, Ashley Vanfleet had 13 kills, 16 digs and three blocks. Libero Hannah Williams had 16 digs. Setter Kylie Field had 29 assists and three aces. Katelyn Armstrong contributed 11 kills and five blocks. For Hurricane, Hollie Isom had 12 digs. Sierra Davis and Gordonlynn Sefita had five and four service aces respectively.
Cedar improves to 8-10 overall, 1-7 in Region 9. Hurricane falls to 2-11 and 1-7 in region.
