MIDWAY — Noah Schone shot one of his best rounds of golf all year Wednesday and his teammates on Pine View’s golf team played well enough to give the Panthers a chance at state heading into Thursday’s final day at Soldier Hollow.
Schone’s 66 on the Soldier Hollow Gold course put him one shot back of two-time defending champ Mitchell Schow (who shot a 65) in the race for the gold medal. Union’s Austin Jaramillo and Tooele’s Braxton Quin are two shots behind Schow after both shot 67 Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Miners opened up a seven-stroke lead on second-place Tooele with a 281 team score. Pine View is sitting in third after a team total of 290, nine strokes behind seven-time champion Park City. Snow Canyon is fourth with a team total of 301 and Union slides in fifth with a 308. Region 9’s Dixie is tied for eighth with a 322.
Snow Canyon has a couple of golfers in the hunt heading into the second day. Triston Gardner finished Wednesday with a 70, just five shots off the lead. Brody Payzant, who won the Region 9 individual crown, carded a 72. Dixie’s Kosuke Aoki (73) and Jaden Milne of Pine View (75) were also near the top of the leaderboard.
All of Park City’s counting scores Wednesday were under 74.
The 3A State Tournament resumes at 9 a.m. Thursday and will conclude when the last group, featuring Schow, Schone and Quin, finishes at approximately 3 p.m.
