ST. GEORGE – A new arts event set for downtown St. George starting Thursday includes “Third Thursday Art Conversations” at the St. George Art Museum, the “Art On Main” gallery stroll on Friday, open artist studios Friday and Saturday and a downtown sculpture tour on Saturday.
The “St. George Art and Studio Tour” is a free, self-guided weekend tour and celebration of the St. George art community. As part of a countywide “Art and Studio Tour” season, it will run the third week of each month from September through June. In January 2016, it will be part of the “Arts to Zion Art and Studio Tour.”
“What we’re doing is starting a St. George Art and Studio Tour and trying to consolidate the arts events that happen downtown in St. George and also having some open studios,” Bobbi Wan-kier, Arts to Zion/Arts and Studio Tour founder and coordinator, said.
St. George is the first to commit to the new monthly studio tour, and similar events are anticipated to follow for other areas of the county on different weekends of the month; however, those plans have not yet been finalized, Wan-kier said.
“We’re moving into having a Snow Canyon Art and Studio Tour and a Zion Canyon Art and Studio Tour and a Hurricane Valley Art and Studio Tour to try to give a taste of what we do in January,” Wan-kier said.
“We’re taking that annual tour (the “Arts to Zion Art and Studio Tour”) and expanding it into these ‘hub’ tours,” she added.
Art Conversations will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the St. George Art Museum, 200 N. Main St. in St. George. Friday and Saturday, daytime “Art and Studio Tour” activities will include artists opening their St. George galleries, cooperatives and studios to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Visit the St. George Art Museum’s brand new fiber arts exhibit: “Twisted, Woven, Spun, and Wrapped.” This week’s 7 p.m. Third Thursday Art Conversation will feature artist Kay Miner, whose installation, “A Bright Swirling of Bugs,” is now on exhibit in the museum’s Legacy Gallery.
Visit open artists’ studios in downtown St. George from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. using a map available online, then, in the evening, enjoy live music and art demonstrations from 5-8 p.m. during the “Art On Main” gallery stroll.
To participate in the stroll, begin at the St. George Art Museum and walk down Main Street from gallery to gallery, filling a punch card for a chance to win a piece of original fine art at the end of the night.
Featured artists in the St. George gallery stroll include Julie Rogers at The Mission Gallery; Mary Grow at Split Rock Fine Art Gallery; photographer Nathan Wotkyns at Wide Angle Photography; photographer Charlie Kessner at Twenty-Five Main Café; and Lonni Clarke, Frank Huff, Georgia Johnson and Erric Wan-kier at the new Arts to Zion Showcase, located at 35 N. Main St.
Music by Beans N’ Wheels, violin soloists and others will also make “Art On Main” a delight for the ears as well as the eyes.
Artist studios are again open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown St. George. Also at 10 a.m., a guided tour of downtown sculptures will be hosted by representatives of the Art Around the Corner Foundation, beginning at the St. George Art Museum and working down to Town Square.
Have you ever wondered about the stories behind the sculptures that seem to magically show up on Main Street every year? Let Art Around the Corner explain how they arrive and how they change from year to year in an extraordinary arrangement with many of the most talented sculptors in the West.
To get started, participants can go to the Arts to Zion website and download a map and instructions.
Attendees are asked to fill out a short registration form at each location to help organizers document attendance, Wan-kier said.
