ST. GEORGE – A collision at 695 E. Tabernacle in St. George Tuesday morning damaged two pickup trucks and sent a truck wheel rolling down the road and into the St. George Cemetery.

At about 9:50 a.m., a red 2006 Dodge Ram was traveling westbound on Tabernacle and stopped at the 700 East intersection stop sign, St. George Police Officer Jamison Hale said. At the same time, a 2007 Nissan Titan was traveling southbound on 700 East.

The driver of the Dodge Ram started across the intersection and was struck by the Nissan. The Nissan impacted the rear passenger-side wheel area, spinning the truck around until it was facing eastbound, Hale said.

The impact broke the truck’s axle and knocked the wheel off. The wheel rolled across the westbound lane of Tabernacle Street, struck a parked Ford Expedition and continued on into the St. George City Cemetery, where a crew from Purgatory Correctional Facility was working. None of the crew members were struck by the wheel.

“The tire rolls down, hits the curb, and it bounces up, hits (the Ford), then goes across and hits one of those headstones,” Hale said.

The headstone was not damaged by the impact.

Airbags deployed  in the Nissan, and the man driving received minor burn marks on his wrist, Hale said.

The man driving the Dodge was not injured.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

The driver of the Dodge Ram was cited for failure to yield, St. George Police Officer Lona Trombley said.

The St. George Police and St. George Fire departments responded to the accident.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
