CEDAR CITY — Business owner Sally Hunter Jensen joins with the Orchestra of Southern Utah to bring “Long Live the Music!” to Cedar City Tuesday, a musical toast to the longevity and success of Jensen’s business, The Wizz, the Orchestra and the importance of great music.
The concert will be offered at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Center Theater, 105 N. 100 East, in Cedar City.
For the second year, Sally Hunter Jensen, has been one of the concert chairs and this year, the event falls on the 25th birthday of her gift shop, The Wizz. Because of this, she said, she decided to sponsor “Long Live the Music” to kick off the celebration.
“I am so pleased that all of these great musicians will gather to celebrate the 25th birthday of my store and to support the Orchestra of Southern Utah,” Jensen said. “These annual fall concerts are the perfect way to showcase the tremendous talent in our community.”
The seven performances of “Long Live the Music!” are varied, ranging from ’50s and Broadway to choral and more.
“I wanted to showcase my talented friends and the versatility of their talents,” Jensen said.
“Verse 2” is a women’s trio with a three-piece combo to back the tunes. Drummer Carylee Zwang said the group’s sound is “plumbing the last 70 decades for music that is perennially popular.”
The Southern Utah Handbell Choir is looking forward to sharing its rendition of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” among other tunes. Then, Julia Tawa, back by popular demand from the 2014 lineup, will solo and play guitar.
“I’ll be sharing at least one of my original songs,” Tawa said.
Both musical veterans, guitarist Gerry Kelsey and bass player Ron Zemanek, have worked up Brubeck and the Beatles and have dubbed themselves for the evening, “Seven Minutes For Sally.”
Hunter Jensen and Angie Van Scoyk will introduce a little Broadway into the mix with a tune from the musical “Wicked.” In addition to providing music for this duo, pianist Harry Taylor is up next, never leaving the piano bench.
The grand finale for the evening is a newly formed choral group, the “Red Rock Singers,” led by Keith Bradshaw.
The “Fall Recital Series” continues each Tuesday in September and full symphony concerts start Oct. 8. Concerts are free with a suggested donation of $5. Musicians volunteer their time to benefit the Orchestra of Southern Utah.
