HURRICANE – A Hurricane man was arrested Sunday after a nightlong standoff with family, police and SWAT officers that culminated in a willing surrender in the early morning hours.

St. George Consolidated Dispatch Center, or Communications Center, dispatched Hurricane City Police at 2:54 a.m. to a residence in the area of 1481 S. 160 West, according to a release issued by Hurricane City Police Department Sunday morning.

Family members who had been able to leave the house had contacted police, the department’s release said, and reported a man, later identified as 25-year-old Kendall Albert Sivils, had threatened the use of a firearm toward family members and was in possession of a firearm.

“It was reported the suspect had physically assaulted his wife and another family member,” the release said.

Officers received information that the suspect was possibly intoxicated, the release said.

The two who left the house included Sivils’ wife and a juvenile who is not their own child, police Sgt. Brandon Buell said.

After arriving at the residence, the release said, police established a perimeter and made several attempts, unsuccessfully, to communicate with the suspect inside.

Taking into consideration the nature of the incident and safety concerns for both the suspect and the responding officers, Washington County Metro SWAT Team was called to assist, the release said. Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Washington City Police also responded to the incident.

It wasn’t until about 6 a.m. that contact was made between the responding officers and the suspect, the release said, and they were able to communicate with him.

“The suspect willingly came out of the home and cooperated with Officers,” the release said.

Sivils was arrested and, at 6:33 a.m. Washington County Sheriff’s Office arrest page shows, Sivils was booked into Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility. Booking charges against him include one class A misdemeanor for child abuse with intent; three class B misdemeanors for assault, domestic violence in the presence of a child and possession of a weapon while under the influence; a class C misdemeanor for intoxication; and one third-degree felony for aggravated assault with the use of a weapon.

Bail for Sivils’ release was scheduled at $9,640, which was posted at about 10:30 a.m., purgatory officials said. Sivils was released at that time.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
