Annual ‘Dog Day Spectacular’ invites everyone out, 4-legged and 2 -legged alike

HURRICANE — To many, they are the finest of companions, they walk with us, they yap with us, some even display extraordinary skills and agility, while others serve the community or individual people in a variety of ways. They are our four-legged friends and the reason for the annual “Dog Day Spectacular” in Hurricane Saturday, a full day of doggone delightful activity put on by Because Animals Matter.

The “Dog Day Spectacular” will be held outdoors at the Hurricane Community Center, 63 S. 100 West, starting with a dog walk at 8:30 a.m., and events from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. accompanied by entertainment from DJ Lex.

Bring your well-behaved leashed dogs to participate in the daylong festivities, mingle with animal advocates, find a goodie or two from local vendors and enjoy some tasty food from the on-site food vendors.

Start the day off at 8:30 a.m. with a hosted dog walk to raise awareness for animals. Robin Kirker, longtime promoter of animal rights and owner of Tails off Trails, will lead the walk. Kirker’s hiking experience with animals promises a lively and enjoyable walk. Your $25 entry donation includes a souvenir T-shirt and raffle tickets. Preregister for the walk through BAM’s website.

Events running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. include FUNgility demonstrations with a chance to have your dog run through the FUNgility course; Skyhoundz DiscDogathon World Championship Qualifier; Southern Utah Dog Sports flyball; and, new this year, an opportunity to certify your dog as a “Canine Good Citizen.”

Kids can have their faces painted by by Jenny Lee  – maybe they will morph into a collie, a schnauzer or a pug?  And given it’s likely to be a warm day, the Hurricane Splash Pad around the corner will give them a good chance to cool off – sorry, no dogs are allowed at the splash pad.

“Dog Day Spectacular” in Hurricane wouldn’t be so spectacular without an appearance by Hurricane City Police Department’s own K-9 Officer Paige. She will be giving a short demonstration and showing off her BAM-donated safety vest.

It might be time to consider enlarging your families and the Spectacular will be a good place to consider some adoptable creatures from BAM and other area rescues H.A.R.T., P.A.W.S., We Care for Animals and local animal shelters.

Vendors will include some with pet-related offerings and if you’re pup is looking a prettier healthier paws or the like, it might be a good time to give them a quick trim: Dog Works Mobile Grooming will be offering nail trimming and other limited services.

To help with fundraising, BAM will host a raffle with a wide variety of products donated by local businesses and the event’s vendors. The 2015-2016 Pets Make a Difference calendar will debut at the event, as well. Both raffle tickets and calendars will be available for purchase at BAM’s event booth.

BAM is a registered 501(c)3 organization. Funds raised at this event support BAM’s community programs that include Meika’s Memorial Medical Fund, low cost spay/neuter programs, the Hurricane Dog Park and other community service projects such as purchasing pet oxygen masks for the local fire department and bulletproof vests for local police K-9s.
