While this month’s event turned on a western-style theme, anticipating the upcoming 81st annual Dixie Roundup Sept. 17-19, others turned out wearing red to show their support for those overcoming addictions, the event’s participation in National Recovery Awareness Month.

“… We’re trying to celebrate that and honor that,” Mayor Jon Pike said, “ and help people understand that what we need to do is help people and not judge them and support them and be glad they are working hard to get out of some of these addictions.”

Many of the booths lining the street sported red bows and balloons as a show of support for those on their journey of overcoming addiction.

“It is making people feel comfortable, proud,” Sharmane Gull, of Therápia Addiction Healing Center, said, “supporting one another; when they’re at different levels, you can lift. And that’s what we’re all about around here.”

Music and entertainment are always a part of the streetfest; Friday’s offered live bands performing on Main Street and West Coast Jazz Players in the Jazz Garden in Ancestor Square.

One of those who chose to attend the Jazz Garden, Randy Thomson, said his night was all about having a relaxing time and enjoying the evening with others.

“Wonderful music while enjoying with friends and lovely drinks,” Thomson said, “nice wine, nice beer.”

“George, Streetfest on Main” continues on the first Friday of October.
