3AA South game day preview: It could be blowout time for many games in Week 2; STGNews videocast

ST. GEORGE — Preseason games in the prep ranks can feature a lot of close and exciting match-ups. And then there’s this week.

There’s always the potential for a close game, but most of the contests in this week’s slate of preseason bouts feature mismatches. Don’t be surprised if the starters in four or five of the six region games scheduled this week are cooling their heels by the Gatorade cooler by the fourth quarter.

On paper, most of the games look like blowouts. But coaches always say that games are not played on paper. Here’s a look at the 3AA games for Week 2, plus watch the video for an update on injured Desert Hills star Nephi Sewell:

WEEK 2 

Aug. 28
Mohave, Ariz., at Dixie, 7 p.m.
Foothill, Nev. at Desert Hills, 7 p.m.
Pine View at Uintah, 7 p.m.
Snow Canyon at Cottonwood, 7 p.m.
Union at Hurricane, 7 p.m.
Virgin Valley, Nev. at Cedar, 7 p.m.

Mohave, Bullhead City Ariz. (0-1) at Dixie (0-1)
Tonight, 7 p.m. @ Walt Brooks Stadium (CEC-TV, ESPNRadio 106.1 FM)
W2W4: Flyers, with size advantage on T-Birds, could rack up big rushing yards.
Key Players:
Mohave – QB Oliver Syme is a dual-threat guy
Dixie – Tre Miller, could get his big year really moving here.
Parry’s Line: none
AG pick: Flyers will roll the Thunderbirds with Miller going for 200 yds.

Foothill, Nev. (0-0) at Desert Hills (0-1)
Tonight, 7 p.m. @ Thunder Stadium (890-AM KDXU)
W2W4: Falcons want revenge after 41-0 loss a year ago
Key players:
Foothill –QB Devon Mueller and RB Justice Jackson
D-Hills – RB Marco Jordan and CB Kobe Sattiewhite
Parry’s line: Thunder by 21.4
AG: Two spread teams, but Falcons have no retunring line. DH rolls for Nephi Sewell.

Snow Canyon (1-0) at Cottonwood (0-1)
Tonight, 7 p.m. @ Colts Stadium
W2W4 – 5A Colts are actually low on numbers (38 on the team), so SC could be deeper
Key players
Snow Canyon – D is good behind Hunter Frei, Brock Staheli and Teagan Mendenhall
Cottonwood – Strengthis also defense, with LBs Pookie Maka and Fua Pututau
Parry’s Line: Warriors by 8.2
AG: Warriors will surprise 5A Colts with speed, depth and a win

Union (0-1) at Hurricane (0-1)
Tonight, 7 p.m.@ Tigers Stadium
W2W4 – Not the passing game – both teams love to run it!
Key players
Hurricane – Nick McDaniel missed most of last game with injury, should go big this week
Union – RB Weston Horrocks is a workhorse, 168 last week
Parry’s Line: Tigers by 24.5
AG: Tigers defense might pitch a shutout this week after good game against Skyline

Pine View (1-0) at Uintah (0-1)
Tonight, 7 p.m. @ Utes Stadium
W2W4 – Utes have more numbers (up to 4A), but new coach and scheme means tough times ahead
Key players
Pine View – SB Lance Mandrigues is quicker than a hiccup
Uintah – RB Tyson Colton is the feature back
Parry’s Line: Panthers by 51.3
AG: Utes will keep it close early, but PV’s quickness will dominate

Virgin Valley, Nev. (0-0) at Cedar (0-1) – 590-KSUB
Tonight, 7 p.m. @ Cedar Stadium
W2W4 – Bulldogs have 16 returning starters, so should be able to hang with Redmen
Key players
Virgin Valley – Dogs have 5 returning O-linemen to block for new QB Hogan Fowles
Cedar – Redmen still run the ball 60/40, but now it’s read play with Fakahua and Oldroyd
Parry’s Line: Redmen by 24
AG: VV’s good line is a factor, but Cedar is just too athletic for Bulldogs

Closest game: Snow Canyon-Cottonwood
Biggest blowout — Tough one, maybe Dixie vs. Mohave
Best pass game: PV’s Livingston
Best rush game: Dixie’s Miller
Best rec game: DH’s Zak Fuchs
