CEDAR CITY – A 36-year-old man was arrested in Cedar City Monday after he allegedly tried to shoot his sister multiple times.
At about noon Monday, Cedar City Police officers were dispatched to the 300 South block of 400 East in Cedar City after a woman called 911, stating a family member was in her home and was shooting at her, according to a press release from the Cedar City Police Department.
Brett Steven Hunter, who reportedly lives in the home with his sister, allegedly became angry with her and came after her with a handgun.
“The (alleged) female victim attempted to barricade herself inside a bedroom,” the press release said. “Hunter shot through the bedroom door multiple times and gained access to the room.”
Hunter’s sister then fled to a bathroom that was connected to the bedroom, the press release said, and again attempted to barricade herself.
Three juvenile girls who were in the home at the time of the shooting had already hidden themselves inside the bathroom, according to the press release.
Hunter gained access to the bathroom and pointed the gun at his sister.
“She was able to grab the firearm just as he shot once more,” the press release said. “The weapon jammed and the (alleged) victim was able to talk Hunter into releasing the firearm.”
When officers arrived at the scene, they called out to Hunter, who exited the home and complied with them. He was taken into custody without incident, the press release said.
Hunter’s sister sustained a minor arm injury as a result of being in close proximity to the muzzle of the gun as it fired. The children were not injured.
Hunter was booked into the Iron County Jail on four third-degree felony counts of aggravated assault; four third-degree felonies for discharging a firearm; and one class B misdemeanor for possession of marijuana.
