WASHINGTON CITY – A car went up in flames Sunday evening while traveling on Green Springs Drive in Washington City near the freeway underpass.
Just after 6 p.m., the Mazda 3 was traveling north in the left lane on Green Springs Drive when the fire broke out in the passenger compartment. However, the fire was contained to the passenger compartment and extinguished rather quickly, Washington City Firefighter John Brian said.
“It was fully involved when we got there,” Brian said, adding that the fire did not extend into the engine or trunk compartment.
The driver of the car was able to make it out of the vehicle and no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
“(The driver) had some clothes in the trunk that were slightly singed,” Brian said. “Other than that, everything in the cab was a total loss.”
As this report is published, the cause of the fire was undetermined, he said.
Motorists heading north on Green Springs Drive through the area were diverted for about 30 minutes onto northbound Interstate 15.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
