HURRICANE — A semitrailer jackknifed on state Route 9 in Hurricane Friday afternoon, causing traffic to be reduced to one lane in either direction for over an hour.
“The semi was coming westbound,” Hurricane Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said. “As it came approaching a light (at North 3400 West), it lost control. The driver tried to maintain control, but the trailer jackknifed and collided with the back of the truck.”
The incident happened at approximately 2:30 p.m.
The jackknifed trailer’s tow bar made contact with the rear tire of the truck and became wedged, immobilizing the truck. A tow truck was called to assist, Buell said, and had to pull the truck forward until the rear tire was released from the trailer bar; once the tire was freed, the vehicle was able to move under its own power.
Traffic was, at one point, backed up almost a mile in both directions as both center lanes were closed and officers directed traffic.
The driver of the truck was cited for improper lane travel and driving too fast for conditions, Buell said.
