Dorthy Schmutz Ballard

(October 10, 1930 – August 4, 2015)

Dorthy Schmutz Ballard, age 84, passed away August 4, 2015.

She was born October 10, 1930, in St. George, Utah, to Grant and Jessie Terry Schmutz. She grew up in Middleton, Utah, and attended school in Washington and St. George and was attending Woodward High School when she met Darwin Ballard. They were married Sept. 29, 1948 in the St. George LDS Temple.

Throughout their life, they were nearly inseparable. They worked together in raising seven children, in fulfilling church callings, starting and running two businesses and ranching activities. They had many fun times together.

She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,  serving in many callings. She was released from her most recent calling just last Sunday. A few of her many talents were sewing, bookkeeping, scrapbooking, cooking and gardening, but she excelled and took delight in being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, never forgetting birthdays or anniversaries.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Darwin, son Scott, stillborn twin boys, one grandson and one great-granddaughter.

She is survived by her sisters Shirley (Donald) Larkin and Leona Schmutz; her children Ray (Kari) Ballard, Greg (Sherrie) Ballard, Tony Ballard, Dale (Maralee) Ballard, Ralph (Ruth) Ballard, Debbie (Nic) Blake; 28 grandchildren; and 63 great-grandchildren.

She was always cheerful and a great example to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and will always be remembered.
