LOGAN — The Mountain Crest Trappers scored eight runs in the second inning and cruised to a 13-1 win over the St. George Sentinels, sending the southern Utah team to the elimination bracket at the American legion State Tournament late Tuesday night.
“They put up eight in the second inning on literally four Texas-leaguers in a row and two infield hits,” said Sentinels coach Shane Johanson. “We got bases loaded next inning and then got picked off second. We never could get it going after that.”
St. George beat the Trappers 10-0 earlier this season and a year ago, the Sentinels eliminated the Trappers on Thursday of the state tournament during a run of four straight wins through the elimination bracket. St. George eventually lost the “if necessary” game of the championship to Helper.
The Sentinels will have to put together a similar run this year, starting with a game today against Fremont at 1 p.m.
The two teams have not met this summer.
The Sentinel, 20-9, had won five straight and 10 of the last 12 before Tuesday night’s defeat.
