James Alan Deru, 68, died July 9, 2015, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was born March 30, 1947, in Ogden, Utah, to John and Glenna Deru.
He grew up in Ogden, Utah, and graduated from Ben Lomond High School in 1965. He served in the Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. After the war, Jim lived in California for several years and later moved to Evanston, Wyoming, to work in the family glass business. He then co-owned and operated Main Street Deli with his sister Ann Quillinan. Jim enjoyed cooking and even won the Evanston chili cook-off contest in 1985. He loved exploring the back country in his 4WD with family, friends, and dogs. Later, he moved to Saint George where he worked for Quality Park. He retired to his tropical paradise, Honolulu, Hawaii, in 2003.
He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Steven and Marty Deru, Linae and Dean Russell, Tennessee and George Newby, Rusty and Flora Deru, Sharon Quillinan, John Quillinan, Lee and Terry Quillinan, and Michael and Erika Deru; and several dozen nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
- Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 25, 11 a.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 West St. George Blvd., St George.
- A viewing will be Saturday, 10-11 a.m. prior to services at the chapel.
- Interment will follow in the St George City Cemetery.
