PAROWAN – A man who was shot in an officer-involved shooting in Parowan late Thursday night has died.

Around 9 p.m., the Parowan Police Department responded to a domestic violence incident in the area of 800 West and 200 South. A witness had called police claiming a man had struck a minor in the face, according to a press release from the Cedar City Police Department.

A responding officer encountered the man involved in the incident in the driveway of the home. The man allegedly had a handgun on him at the time, according to police.

“The suspect pointed a handgun at the officer while approaching him in an aggressive manner. The officer fired two shots at the suspect striking him both times,” the press release states.

Despite receiving medical treatment, the man died.

The Iron County Critical Incident Task Force, which is composed of multiple agencies, is conducting an investigation into the incident.

The officer involved was not injured. The name of the deceased will not be released at this time.

This is a developing story.

  • sagemoon July 10, 2015 at 9:18 am

    Never. Point. Gun. At cop.

  • anybody home July 10, 2015 at 12:28 pm

Did I miss something in the story? Where does it mention a black man?

    • mesaman July 10, 2015 at 5:12 pm

It didn’t. Scummy has to put a minimum of four inane comments each evening.

  • ignoramus July 10, 2015 at 1:35 pm

I agree.. where does it mention ethnicity? All I will advise is, comply comply comply. The facts are dv related incidents are one of the top if not the top most dangerous for police AND potential/victims. The fact the officer stated he not only 1) had a gun 2) pointed it at officers 3) asked by officers to stop/disarm 4) aggresively came at police… im a simpleton. That right there is enough for me to say great work police. Sad a man lost his life, but anyone stop and think of other potential victims? By the man doing what he did only validates his motives. Police officers put their lives on the line EVERY SINGLE DAY. To us what is “routine” is NEVER routine to police. Sad how “we” are the first to judge and mobday armchair quarterback, but I challenge all of you to do what police do. Anyone ever think of what a DV incident really is? Its a victim that cries for help then turn it down only cuz he/she is sorry. Its not the system my friends.. its you its me its the world. How many of you are sheepdogs? How many of you are sheep? He without sin cast the first stone. Im tired of people/media trying to “relate” “compare” “combine” other incidents to a simple solution. Everyone hates the police, but theyre the first to respond when we cry when only hours ago we mocked, spat and lied about those sworn to protect. Yet everytime police respond its with a smile of service. Its time we “fix”ourselves and stop blaming those you expect to “fix” your problems in 20 minutes. Grow up, take accounrability for you.. itll all fall in place.

Excellent piece…and you are not an ignoramus.

    • 42214 July 10, 2015 at 6:27 pm

It’s a sarcastic comment pointing out that Parowan won’t riot like Ferguson because the cops shot somebody. You can’t see that?

  • ignoramus July 10, 2015 at 7:36 pm

Thank you for the kind words anybody home. It is reassuring to know there are sane and rational people in our midst. But I do put some blame on reality tv…

  • ignoramus July 11, 2015 at 2:57 pm

Sarcastic point? A point YOU took as sarcasm that someone else doesnt and possibly feels theres validity in its comment. But also a point I found offensive. But who cares bout what others feel right? That sarcasm “point” introduced race which in turn breeds ignorance. Actually both are very much tangled as one. But why ever go there to start? Would it have made a difference if the Officer was Black and the victim/suspect was White? Is there a difference if the Officer was Asian and the victim/suspect White? I guess I dont see the sarcasm when media and society in general view only Black and White. When was the last time anyone read or heard about an Officer involved shooting of a different race? How bout an Officer involved shooting when the tables were turned? I know recently six Officers were involved with a Black male who sustained injuries and died. Should I raise my hands to the sky and say “phew” glad some of those Officers were Black.. raise has nothing to do with anything, period. Those that say otherwise probably need to think before speaking. Those that were shot during a Police encounter probably should have thought before acting, period.

You’re not always that much fun.

    • Mean Momma July 11, 2015 at 5:18 pm

Race has nothing to do with anything period? Well that’s some bull … right there! You really ARE an ignoramus!
      Ed. ellipsis.

You made it past the moderator! Congratulations.

    • 42214 July 11, 2015 at 6:22 pm

If you think in today’s political climate race means nothing you should be “Naive Ignoramus” Infortuneately race is a dominant factor in way too much. You prove the point that nothing can be said without offending someone. We’ve morphed into a society where you have to consider what you say in terms of the fewest people offended.

      • ladybugavenger July 11, 2015 at 10:53 pm

Free speech is out the window. We all gotta tip toe around to not offend anyone…..that doesn’t sound free……heck, some people need to be offended and wake up! I think fun bag wakes people up and gets them riled up- but really, fun bag said “if” so I don’t know why some people got all riled up about it. Thanks for the entertainment.

  • ignoramus July 11, 2015 at 4:32 pm

Thank you, um… Fun Bag? But how bout this, instead of focusing on a username… how bout you and I have a mature intellectual debate about the actual topic on hand? And I do apoligize ahead of time if your name is singular for a reason. Life must be difficult with only one bag.

    • fun bag July 11, 2015 at 6:34 pm

I could go through a point by point debate with you, but judging from your previous posts, you’re not worth the effort 🙂

  • ignoramus July 11, 2015 at 6:33 pm

Mean momma, what im stating is people shouldnt focus on race, period. Unfortunately people make bad choices etc. But they are still people rt? Or are you refered to by ur race? Your stement comes across as ignoramus. One might read into it and say the comment is a racial slur. But im giving you the benefit of the doubt. After all I dont know what race you are so im not sure how to “properly” address you rt?

    • 42214 July 11, 2015 at 9:03 pm

You throw things around like, “I’m offended” You accuse someone as making a “possible” racial slur. You use the same tactics Al Sharpton uses to minimalize or undermine what others say to shut down fair debate. Please, specifically what did Mean Momma say that could possible said to be a racial slur. Back up your accusations. “One might read into it and say the comment was a racial slur.” Really? Show us.

    • Mean Momma July 11, 2015 at 9:18 pm

People shouldn’t focus on race… Period, but that is CLEARLY NOT what you said. I have no idea how my comment could be considered a racial slur, but I’d love for you to elaborate so I can have a good laugh! Please, put your foot in your mouth some more.

  • ignoramus July 11, 2015 at 7:23 pm

True.. it would take a lot of effort on your part. I wouldnt want to deflate your only bag. See how PEOPLE can be ignorant, inconsiderate and defensive? THATS exactly the point i was trying to make. Once again neither of us know what race the other is but yet immaturity just flows. Well on my part, i take accountability for me.

  • ignoramus July 11, 2015 at 7:31 pm

I agree with you 42214. Im not at any means naive to race and the huge position it unfortunately plays in society. What my post was originally refering to was a comment the suspect/victim was African American, to be politically correct. What was taken out of my posts then a half heart attempt to make it a race issue was on those that replied to me. But you are sadly correct on what influence race has today. Guess I wish it wasnt so. I do fav the saying “im not racists i hate everyone equally” but before im attacked, i hate no one. Its reference point as the meanin.. people are people you like some you dislike others. But liking and disliking shouldnt be biased on skin color, guess thats all im trying to say

  • ignoramus July 12, 2015 at 9:09 am

It is not allowable to arraign the motives of a member, but the nature or consequences of a measure may be condemned in strong terms. It is not the man, but the measure, that is the subject of debate.

    • 42214 July 12, 2015 at 10:13 am

Full of crap! Long winded evasive answer ala Al Sharpton that doesn’t come close to responding to the question. Keep throwing you racial slur accusations now we know they are meaningless.

  • ignoramus July 12, 2015 at 10:10 am

And I never refered to fun bag comment regarding his word “if”. I only responded to the very first comment on the thread. “If” people could understand the inuendo in the comment that par layed the “if” and “black” then nothing is further from the truth on how “ify” idiots really are.

  • anybody home July 12, 2015 at 10:38 am

I’ll go back to my original question way back at the beginning of this thread and my response to what was said.

Here’s a story about a man being shot by an officer, a sad enough situation but not sad enough for 42214 and FunBag (who is not that much fun). They had to bring the issue of race into the discussion when there was NO MENTION OF RACE in the story. It was about domestic violence, period.

There was no sane reason to bring RACE into the discussion except for one reason – to be snarky and snide and have a chance to say something rude. I was trying to understand why RACE even became mentioned in their comments and Ignoramus had the same questions. And Ignoramus was then trashed for his points. Maybe I should not have agreed with him, because I know that there are trolls out there happy to take me down any chance they get. That’s the nature of trolls – remember they live under bridges and try to hurt anybody they can.

Why these comments are not better moderated is beyond me. Why the obvious trolls are allowed to continue trolling with such rude comments clearly intended to denigrate certain groups of people or individuals brings the SGN down to the level of the National Enquirer or worse.

We are now asked to sign in before leaving a comment. It’s possible to block commenters – I know that because WordPress allows it. What’s the point of asking commenters to sign in if you’re not going to use it? My guess is that the SGN editorial staff either agrees with the trolls or likes the mayhem they create. Either way it’s Shinola journalism.

    • fun bag July 12, 2015 at 11:33 am

you should just calm down and relax,,, didn’t u say u don’t even live in So UT anymore? Anyways, like i’ve said a bunch of times i’m not here to entertain anyone… 🙂

  • 42214 July 12, 2015 at 11:09 am

First of all a guy getting shot for pointing a gun at an officer is not sad, it’s a celebration that the officer survived and the idiot is dead.
Secondly, pointing out that Parowan won’t be a Ferguson is a pretty objective point that lends itself to a question of why? You seem to assume it’s a question of race, I didn’t say a word about race. I said, “Ihope Parowan doesn’t become another Ferguson.” Period.
Finally, I live in a very nice house with a gorgeous view of Zion.

  • fun bag July 12, 2015 at 11:35 am

And anyways, it would be quite a thing if the only black man in parowan was shot by an officer. I’m not even sure any black people reside in parowan to be honest…. so …
