Fire destroys car on State Street

LAVERKIN — A man experiencing car trouble made it to his home in LaVerkin Wednesday evening just as the vehicle caught fire.

A man in his 30s was driving his black Ford Escort on State Street when the car lost power, Hurricane City Fire Chief Tom Kuhlmann said.

The man was very close to his home, which is located on State Street. He was able to pull into the parking area in front of his home and got out of the car. That was when he noticed flames starting to come from the hood.

The man called 911, though a passerby had also seen the fire and called it in just before him, at about 5:26 p.m.

LaVerkin City Police officers were the first on scene, Officer Jake Bulkley said. The Hurricane Valley Fire District responded immediately afterward.

When responders first arrived, Kuhlmann said, the car was completely engulfed in flames.

Once firefighters were there, it took about five minutes to put the flames out with fire hoses.

There were no passengers in the car, and the driver of the car didn’t report any injuries or show signs of smoke inhalation.

The driver was able to pull some items from the back of the car once the fire was extinguished.

The front end of the car was significantly damaged, leaving the vehicle inoperable. There was no damage to anything other than the car.

Police said they are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Traffic on state Route 9 was stopped for about five minutes due to the fire, Bulkley said, but traffic was quickly flowing again as normal.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
