Man in serious condition after flipping, crashing motorcycle

HURRICANE – A man was transported to the hospital Wednesday afternoon following a motorcycle crash on state Route 59, near milepost 21, in Hurricane.

At approximately 1:09 p.m., a 45-year-old man on a black 1998 BMW motorcycle was traveling south on SR-59 with a group of motorcyclists, Hurricane City Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said.

The group was on a big hill where the road curves, Buell said, when, according to witnesses and police investigation, the man veered just slightly off to the side of the road.

The motorcycle’s front tire caught on some gravel and dirt on the edge of the roadway, which started pulling the motorcycle off to the right-hand side of the road, Buell said. The rider overcorrected, causing the motorcycle to flip and throw him off the bike.

The man, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, sustained injuries to his leg and was transported via ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George in serious condition, Buell said.

The motorcycle was still operable and did not need to be towed.

Traffic was diverted to one lane for approximately 35-45 minutes.

No citations were issued in connection with the incident.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
