ST. GEORGE — The top five golfers at the 3A State Tournament at Bloomington Hills Country Club Wednesday were from southern Utah schools, with Desert Hills ace Katie Perkins coming up with the best score of the day.
Behind Perkins’ 71 — which equates to 91 points in the Stableford scoring system — Desert Hills earned a nine-point lead after day one of the two-day event. Park City is second in team scoring with 317 points to DH’s 326. Pine View is third (307) and Snow Canyon sits in fourth (298).
“The course was playing well,” said Snow Canyon coach Brooks Bergeson. “The wind started to pick up for the later golfers, so that may have had an effect on things.”
Region 9’s golfers loved the home-city advantage and capitalized by taking the top five places in the individual race. Perkins led the way, followed by Pine View’s Taylor Bandley, who shot a 73 for 89 Stableford points. Snow Canyon’s Lexi Hamel is third after shooting a 74 (88 points), followed by Dixie’s Grace Rachens, who shot 77 (85). Perkins’ teammate, Kyla Smith, rounded out the top five as she shot 78 (84).
Park City’s Saylor Rabe and Morgan’s Madison Shinn were the top scorers from somewhere other than southern Utah. They both shot 80 to give them 82 Stableford points and a tie for sixth place.
In the team race, D-Hills got contributions from Tori Thomas (80 points), Bailee Carmack (71), Abby Morris (66) and K’Jhana Plant (50).
Second-place Park City had every golfer score at least 70 points, while third-place Pine View had four of six golfers score 64 or more. The top four scores from each team’s six golfers counts for the team total.
The final group of Thursday’s second round will include Perkins, Rabe and Bandley and will tee off on Bloomington Hills’ No. 1 at 9:30 a.m.
