CEDAR CITY – Police are actively searching for a potentially armed suspect Sunday night in the area of 200 N. 1400 West in Cedar City. Citizens in the nearby area are advised to stay in their homes and notify the Cedar City Police Department of any suspicious movement or noises.

The Cedar City Police Department responded to a call which came in around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, reporting a man, who “appeared to be intoxicated,” was waving a gun around on the front porch of his home on the corner of 1400 West, Cedar City Police Public Information Officer Jimmy Roden said.

When police arrived on scene, Roden said, the man went back into his house and came back outside without a weapon.

When officers tried to convince the man to come to the roadway and speak with them, the man went back inside the house instead, Roden said.

“So we tried to contain him with the officers they had,” Roden said. “They called for the tactical team to come and to try to communicate with him.”

After interviewing family members to better understand the man’s mental state, they were given permission to enter the house, he said. Once inside the home, police were unable to find the man.

After hours of preparation, the Iron Metro SWAT Team, which is a multi-jurisdictional unit, entered the man’s home, but was unable to locate him as of 12:20 a.m. Monday. After a SWAT search for the man yielded no results, a K-9 unit also searched the house without success.

Since the man in question was not found inside the home or anywhere on the property, the search was called off, Roden said.

A warrant for the man’s arrest on misdemeanor offense charges will be submitted to the judge for approval Monday morning, he said.

Earlier in the evening, around 10 p.m. Sunday, Cedar Communications posted the following message on its Facebook page urging residents to stay inside their homes:
