Officials discover possible suicide victim in Grand Canyon

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. — Authorities are investigating a possible suicide at Grand Canyon National Park after receiving reports of a body located below the South Rim.

According to a press release from Grand Canyon National Park, at approximately 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to the South Rim of the park after the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a call reporting a potential suicide.

Responding staff conducting an initial “hasty search,” one of the first methods used in the early morning of a search mission, did not identify a potential victim, the statement said. However, a subsequent search by the National Park Service Helitak crew identified a body below the rim.

Because of weather conditions, terrain and safety concerns, the statement said, teams will attempt a recovery Wednesday morning.

An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service, the statement said, and no further information is available at this time.
