Region 9 softball: Warriors clinch region title with big win over Canyon View

ST. GEORGE — Snow Canyon clinched its second Region 9 title in the past three years Tuesday with a dominating 8-2 victory over second place Canyon View. With the win SC is 9-2 in region and has clinched first place and the No. 1 seed.

The Warriors pounded out 10 hits and played nearly error-free softball in pulling away late. It was still a game at 4-1 heading into the sixth. But Snow Canyon rallied for four runs, sparked by a lead-off single by Shelbee Hutchings. Natalie Gunn followed with a base hit and Addie Smith made it 5-1 with SC’s only extra-base hit of the game, a double to the gap in right-center.

Mada Mooring beat out an infield hit for an RBI to make it 6-1 and Sonya Hardy, back from a recent injury, knocked in two more with a single to the outfield to push the lead to 8-1.

Heather Prestwich got the win for SC, scattering seven hits. Skylar Gates, who is just getting back into the swing of things after breaking her hand earlier this year, had two hits and two RBIs for Snow Canyon, which is 14-4 overall. The Warriors won the region with a 12-0 record in 2013, but finished a game back last season.

SC will host a playoff pod May 9 beginning at 10 a.m. The Warriors will likely Morgan in the pod’s second game at noon. The winner will not play a second game that day, but instead advance to the second round May 14 at Little Valley’s softball fields.

Canyon View, 9-12 overall and 8-3 in region, finishes out the regular season with a road game at Pine View Friday afternoon.

The Warriors have one regular season game left, a home tilt against Hurricane Friday afternoon.

The Flyers pounded out 19 hits and put eight runs up in the top of the sixth the shorten the game via mercy rule.

Summer Simkins got the win in the circle and Shaunna Gelter had a pair of doubles as Dixie scored a run in the second, four in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and eight in the sixth. Simkins allowed five hits, but her defense was flawless behind her. She also had four hits at the plate, as did Gelter.

The win was a crucial one for the Flyers, who are at 5-5 in region play, a half-game behind Pine View for that fourth place spot and a place in the 3A playoffs. Dixie has a home game with Desert Hills Friday and then a weather make-up game vs. Cedar next Monday. The Flyers swept the season series with Pine View.
