ST. GEORGE — Dixie State’s Haley Dunn won the gold medal for the women and the Red Storm men took home the team award at the Pac West Conference Championships held this week at Sunbrook Golf Course.
Three rounds of 18 holes wasn’t enough golf for Dunn as the senior birdied a one-hole playoff Wednesday to win the 2015 Pacific West Women’s Golf Championship.
Down one stroke on the 18th hole, Dunn made par after a shot to get her out of the bunker and put her within striking distance at the hole. She putted for par while Cal Baptist’s Tina Yang had a putt for par come up short for a bogey to set up the tie. Dunn finished her 18 holes with a 74, totaling 220 for her three days.
Using the 17th hole as the start of the sudden-death playoff, Dunn’s second shot landed just a few feet shy of the pin to set up a birdie attempt on the par-4. Yang had to make a putt from just on the edge of the green about 20 feet away and missed to the left.
Dunn was able to make the short putt to give her a second individual title after winning it in 2013. Her finish helped give the Dixie State women a second-place overall finish.
Dunn will represent the Red Storm at the NCAA West Regionals with Dixie State looking to earn an at-large bid to the tournament.
For the DSU men’s team, entering the final round down two strokes to Dominican University at the start of the day, No. 22 Dixie State came back to win its first ever Pacific West Conference title, Wednesday.
DSU went back and forth with Dominican all day at the Sunbrook Golf Course and came into the 18th hole tied.
The 2014 defending champ Mark Milton chipped from outside the green on his second shot to putt for par. He missed his par-putt and bogeyed the hole, setting up Kenny You with a chance to give Dixie State the victory.
You made his putt for par and the Red Storm earned its first conference title in men’s golf.
“I am really proud of the guys,” head coach Brad Sutterfield said. ” We stumbled early but hung in there enough to get it done. This was a really good chance for us to see how we handle the pressure. When we get in a spot to win again, hopefully soon, we will be much better off.”
Cal Baptist’s Kavan Eubank shot the lowest round of the tournament with a 6-under 66 to come from behind and win the individual championship. He finished at 3-under for the tournament.
Dixie State totaled 878 for its three rounds, edging Dominican’s 879 while BYU-Hawaii and Cal Baptist tied for third place at 899.
You finished with a 75 in the final round, his highest total of the tournament but made the big putt when he needed to and finished tied for second.
“Kenny didn’t have his best game today but gutted it out like I have never seen before,” Sutterfield said. “He never quits.”
With You off his game, Cody Wass up big for the Red Storm, with the team’s best score of the final round in a 73 to tie for 14th overall.
“Cody made some incredible shots today that were absolutely critical for our team,” Sutterfield said. “When you get a performance like that it’s huge.”
Dixie State awaits the NCAA West Regionals now, coming up in May.
