HURRICANE – A man driving a white Chevrolet Monte Carlo led police on a high-speed chase through Hurricane Sunday afternoon, reaching speeds up to 84 mph before crashing his car into a construction truck parked near 300 S. State Street in LaVerkin.
Just before 4 p.m., an attempt-to-locate bulletin was issued for the white Chevrolet car after witnesses reported the driver, a 71-year-old man from Smithfield, Utah, was driving erratically and heading into oncoming traffic, according to a Washington County Sheriff’s Office press statement issued Monday.
Washington County deputies, and Hurricane City and LaVerkin City police officers attempted to stop the vehicle for several miles, beginning near Interstate 15 Exit 16 on state Route 9 and continuing on through Hurricane and LaVerkin.
During the pursuit, the man left a trail of destruction, striking another vehicle on state Route 9 near 3400 W. State Street and damaging signage and construction traffic cones as he drove, the statement said.
Officers were prepared to set up road spikes to deflate the tires of the vehicle as the man continued on at a high rate of speed, running a red light, driving up over the median and leaving the roadway several times.
The chase came to end when the man collided head-on with a construction truck parked near 300 S. State Street in LaVerkin.
The cause of the ordeal was related to some kind of medical episode, Washington County Chief Deputy Shauna Jones said, and the man was treated at the scene by medical personnel.
The man was the only occupant of the Chevrolet car, according to the statement, and no serious injuries were reported as a result of either collision.
The incident is still under investigation, but drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor, the statement said.

“medical episode” Let’s speculate on what medical episode would cause heading into wrong side of traffic, driving erratically, a high speed chase and running head on into a consctruction truck….was he unconscious while the cops were chasing him??

I read the go fund me page. His blood sugar was almost non existent. Thanks for sharing the “medical episode” that so many of us our curious about. Hope your grandpa recovers fully from bumps and bruises and hangs up his keys to the car. Hanging up the keys and not driving is sometimes difficult for the elderly to do but I hope he comes to that conclusion that its best.

Yes, he was released yesterday with only minor injuries.. whip lash and bruising.
I’m sorry for your grandfather and hope he fully recovers. I have to say though that your family should not let him drive any longer after this episode. Scary for him and everyone else.
Thank you for your thoughts, we are thinking his license will probably be revoked. It is definitely something that is hard with things like diabetes and epilepsy. Where most the time everything is fine and they are safe in the road, but there is always that chance.
