IVINS – Two men were arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing property, identifying documents and finance cards from the home of a man incarcerated at Purgatory Correctional Facility.

While Santa Clara-Ivins police officers were out on patrol in Ivins, they observed items being taken from the home of a man who police knew was in jail at the time, and then loading them into a truck, according to probable cause statements filed in support of the arrests.

Police made contact with the two men, identified as 27-year-old Timothy Joe Maas and 20-year-old Johnnie Junior Huddleston, as they were loading Maas’ pickup truck with multiple items taken from inside and outside the home, including tools, furniture and documents.

During a conversation with Huddleston, police noticed he was reaching behind his back and emptying his pockets, according to a statement of probable cause. Police detained Huddleston and located a large knife that was running parallel with his belt.

According to the statement, some of the items Huddleston was removing from his pockets were financial cards belonging to the homeowner.

Social Security cards and other important documents belonging to another person were located inside of Maas’ truck, the statement said.

Police also discovered damage done to the outside of the home on an exterior heater door.

Police contacted the homeowner at the correctional facility who told them that he did not know the men and said no one had permission to be in the home or take property from the residence.

Both Huddleston and Maas were arrested and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.

Huddleston was charged with a second-degree felony for burglary of a dwelling, a third-degree felony for unlawful acquisition of a finance card, and a class B misdemeanor for carrying a concealed dangerous weapon.

Maas was charged with a second-degree felony for burglary of a dwelling, a third-degree felony for possession of another’s identifying documents, and a class B misdemeanor for theft.

Judge Eric A. Ludlow, of the 5th District Court, set Maas’ and Huddleston’s bail amounts at $17,342 during their initial court appearances Friday.

Both Maas and Huddleston are scheduled to make their next court appearance on March 30, where Maas will be represented by court-appointed attorney Jay Winward and Huddleston will be represented by court-appointed attorney Douglas Terry.

Maas was also arrested three weeks ago for stealing a bike; he was currently out on bail pending process of that case. Since 2006, Maas has accrued a long list of convictions for theft and burglary, according to Utah court documents. He was also convicted of possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia in December 2013.

Huddleston was arrested in December 2014 on drug-related charges.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
