ST. GEORGE — Four pitchers climbed the mound Saturday for Desert Hills Saturday and not one of them gave up an earned run in a doubleheader sweep of 3A foe North Sanpete at Thunder Field. Desert Hills took the first game 13-3 and shutout the Hawks in the second game 3-0.
In 13 innings of work, DH pitchers Braiden Irvin, Tanner Rosemeyer, Kayson Bowler and Brayden Hurdsman teamed up allow just six hits and three walks.
Irvin started the first game and worked three innings as his Thunder teammates struck for 10 runs in those three innings. He allowed one unearned run and left with a 10-1 lead. Rosemeyer came in and pitched the final three innings in the mercy-rule shortened game, allowing one hit and striking out five Hawks, although two unearned runs came home in the fifth inning.
Irvin was also the hitting star in the first game, walking in the first, doubling in two runs in the second, hitting a 3-run homer in the third and singling in the fifth. Trey Allred, Wyatt Bendall, Chance Milne, Hunter Staley and Preston Creager all had two hits each as the Thunder racked up 15 base knocks. Milne and Ryan Watts each had RBI doubles in the sixth to end the game with one out.
In the other game, the pitching was pretty good for North Sanpete. But it was extraordinary for Desert Hills. Bowler went five innings, allowing just one hit and one base on balls. Hurdsman was perfect in two innings to earn the save, striking out five of the six batters he faced.
Chad Nelson broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second when he walked, stole second, advanced on a groundout and scored on a passed ball. D-Hills made it 2-0 in the third on an RBI single by Bendall that scored Hursdsman, who had doubled. The Thunder added an insurance run in the sixth when Trey Allred doubled home Daniel Array.
Desert Hills, 7-4 on the season, had a bye from region play this week. The Thunder will match up with Cedar this coming week with a home game Tuesday night and a trip to Iron County on Friday. The Redmen beat DH 6-2 in a preseason tourney a couple of weeks ago.
