LAVERKIN — A woman was injured and a Hurricane man arrested on multiple warrants after the ATV they were riding in crashed in LaVerkin Thursday.
Officer Jacob Bulkley, of the LaVerkin City Police Department, said he was on patrol at about 10 p.m. Thursday near BLM land in LaVerkin when he was flagged down by a man waving a lighted cellphone. The man informed Bulkley he had been in an ATV accident and a woman was injured.
Upon driving to the accident site, Bulkley discovered a four-seat ATV that had been unable to stop before dropping into a large rut in the road. The front end of the ATV dropped into the rut violently, throwing the woman into the dashboard and disabling the ATV.
Life Flight was alerted but eventually cancelled. The woman, conscious and talking, was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center with injuries to her face and abdominal area.
A passenger in the ATV, Ryan Sawyers, 19, of Hurricane, was arrested at the scene for multiple outstanding misdemeanor warrants and was taken to Purgatory Correctional Facility. Three of Sawyers’ warrants were due to unpaid traffic tickets, his mother, Vanessa Taylor, said. (See ed. note)
Bulkley said all passengers in the ATV were wearing their seat belts, and alcohol was not suspected as a factor in the crash.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
