IVINS – One of Snow Canyon State Park’s iconic trails is about to get rebranded and park management along with the Friends of Snow Canyon nonprofit are inviting the public to participate in a contest to give Three Ponds trail its new name.
Somewhat of a misnomer, the Three Ponds trail has led to, at best, some visitor consternation and, at worst, some dangerous situations for park guests who decide to take the trail whose name rings with the promise of a desert oasis, Assistant Park Manager Jordan Perez said.
Park visitors will pore over the park map looking for the best trail to take and Three Ponds is often chosen because of its name and the desire to see water; but in reality, Perez said, there is rarely water in the three sandstone holes that give the trail its current name.
In summer months the misleading trail title can and has led to hikers getting lost, he said, or dehydrated in their search for the water ponds.
“Those who have hiked the trail know the name ‘Three Ponds’ is misleading and has the potential to leave visitors with a negative experience,” Perez said in a press release.
In order to help facilitate a better guest experience in the park and to engage the community that loves and visits the park often, park management has teamed up with Friends of Snow Canyon to create a renaming contest.
The public is invited to submit their most creative and trail appropriate name to [email protected]. Please include “Three Ponds Name Change” in the subject line.
The winner will receive an annual pass to all Utah state parks, a $75 value, as well as the honor of having their trail name posted on all the new signage and park maps.
The trail renaming is part of a broader park goal, Perez said, to update signs and trail markers and create a uniformed park look.
Members of the Friends of Snow Canyon will narrow the collected submissions down to the top five, after which the Friends of Snow Canyon board along with Perez and Park Manager Kristen Comella will choose the winner to be announced in April.
There is no limit to the amount of times you can enter and all submissions are due by March 31.
