ST. GEORGE – A two-vehicle collision on 383 S. Mall Drive in front of Fossil Ridge Intermediate School early Monday morning caused one vehicle to flip on its side and land in the median.

Just before 7:40 a.m., the driver of a blue Ford Flex SUV and her 17-month-old passenger were exiting the Fossil Ridge parking lot, turning left and heading south on Mall Drive, St. George Police Sgt. Craig Harding said.

The driver of the blue Ford SUV proceeded to make the turn without seeing the white Chevrolet Tahoe SUV and its occupants – a male driver and his 12-year-old passenger, traveling north on Mall Drive, and the two vehicles collided, Harding said.

The impact of the collision caused the white Chevrolet SUV to rollover and land in the median, Harding said, adding that the vehicles were traveling at low speeds, but rollovers can still occur at low speeds nonetheless.

“I don’t think the weather was a contributing factor except the road may have caused it to slide around after it got hit,” Harding said. “But I don’t think speed or slippery road conditions is a factor at this point. I think the other person was probably just inattentive.”

No serious injuries were reported, St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

The driver of the blue Ford SUV was issued a citation for failure to yield to oncoming traffic, Despain said, and the driver of the white Chevrolet SUV was issued a citation for driving with a suspended driver’s license.

“This is one reason that we’ve got to have seatbelts on even if you’re at low speeds,” Harding said. “A lot of people say they don’t have seatbelts on until they get on the freeway. Well, this type of a rollover can occur within 30-40 feet and so this is why we need seatbelts on.”

Both northbound and southbound lanes of Mall Drive were reduced to one lane of traffic while the scene was attended to and eventually cleared.
