NEW HARMONY – Nearly 100 New Harmony Rocky Mountain Power customers have been without power since 4:45 p.m. Sunday due to a power line fire caused by heavy snow.
Like the pole fire reported Sunday in Cedar City that knocked out fire for nearly 1,000 residents, the fire was caused by the weight of the ice and snow that formed on the power line, Rocky Mountain Power Spokesperson Paul Murphy said.
The stress from the weight of moist snow caused an arc in the line that stretched it and created a spark, he said.
“It actually happens quite a bit,” he said. “Either from high winds or from moisture, or snow.”
As of 5:15 p.m., Rocky Mountain Power crews were on their way to New Harmony to replace the burned pole.
Providing there are no complications, Murphy said New Harmony residents can expect their power to be restored within a couple of hours.
