OREM — Three wrestlers from southern Utah brought home gold Saturday, with two other Region 9 grapplers settling for silver medals as the 3A State Wrestling Tournament was held at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center.

Dallin Brooks from Cedar, Cody Stevenson from Desert Hills and Tyler Stevenson from Desert Hills all completed their quests for state championships on the spotlighted mats at UVU. Brooks, at 160 pounds, won a 3-0 decision over Payden Osborn of Payson. Cody Stevenson (195 pounds) pinned Juab’s Tryler Greenhalgh in the middle of the second round. And Tyler Stevenson nearly battled to a stalemate, finally edging Aaron Dick of Uintah 5-4 in the 220-pound class.

Drew Hansen, from Pine View, was in a tight battle with Cameron Dickinson (Dickinson was ahead 6-4 in points) when the match referee ruled a very quick pin after Dickinson had score a reversal. Hansen had to settle for second place in the 113-pound class. He was second last year at 106.

The biggest wrestlers, at 285, were Payson’s Brian Hoschouer and Desert Hills’ Trevor Ottenschot. The Thunder grappler had bulked up after competing at 182 last season (where he finished second at state), but he was clearly at a huge size disadvantage against Hoschouer. The two battled hard, with Ottenschot leading 4-3 late. But Hoschouer got a reversal with a little over 30 seconds left in the third round and held the exhausted Ottenschott for the final half-minute to escape with the 5-4 win.

For Brooks, who finished second last season, the state title was an amazing experience.

“I’ve been dreaming about this since last year, well, really since I was a freshman,” he said. “I still can’t believe it’s real. I don’t think it has sunk in yet.”

The only other medalist for Cedar was Jaxon Williamson, who was third at 170 pounds.

The Stevenson brothers both captured their second straight state titles. Cody, at 195, was head and shoulder above his opponent in the finals. He was leading Greenhalgh 6-1 when he finally overpowered the Juab wrestler and pinned him to end the match at the 58 second mark of the second round.

“Last year I beat him in a major decision, so it was important for me to pin him this year,” Stevenson said. “It feels really great. We put in a lot of hard work.”

Tyler Stevenson didn’t have it so easy. Dick and Stevenson looked incredibly similar physically and the two battled with similar styles. Dick led early, scoring a takedown at the 40 second mark of the first round and, after an escape by Stevenson, another takedown in building a 4-1 lead. Stevenson scored a reversal for two points with nine seconds left in the first round to cut it to 4-3.

Stevenson finally took the lead 30 seconds into the second round on another reversal to make it 5-4. After a brief injury timeout between the second and third round, the tired grapplers held on in a scoreless third round and Stevenson emerged victorious.

“I’m worn out,” Stevenson said. “That was the hardest match I’ve had all year. He was a tough opponent.”

The last match of the championship evening Saturday night featured Hoschouer and Ottenschoot and the big guys didn’t disappoint. It was Hoschouer’s brute strngth and size against the quickness of Ottenschot. Had the match lasted another 30 seconds, Ottenschot may have won. He had trailed 3-0 in the second round, but rallied for a 4-3 lead late in the third.

Other medalists from southern Utah include Chance Bundy of Desert Hills (third place at 126 pounds), Liam Williams of Pine View (third at 145) and Ethan Del Toro of Desert Hills (third at 182).

Payson easily won the team title with 228.5 points and had three gold medalists as well as four silver medalists. Juab was second with 172 points.

D-Hills was fifth, Cedar eighth and Pine View 10th in the team scoring.
