Reckless driver gets one-way ticket back to Vegas after I-15 drug bust

MESQUITE, Nevada – A phone tipster traveling on Interstate 15 was able to help police make a felony drug arrest Saturday in Mesquite, Nevada.

A motorist traveling on I-15 called Mesquite Police Dispatch Saturday to report a reckless and possibly impaired driver who was also traveling on I-15, according to a press release from the Mesquite Police Department.

Officers caught up with the alleged reckless driver, identified as James Michael Cruz, 35, of Las Vegas, as he was exiting I-15 onto Pioneer Boulevard in Mesquite. Responding officers conducted a traffic stop and began a DUI investigation of Cruz.

“While the officers were investigating the incident, the driver attempted to put multiple pills into his mouth and flee the scene on foot,” the press release said.

Officers struggled with Cruz, according to the press release, but were ultimately able to take him safely into custody.

“The officers subsequently searched the driver and his vehicle and located heroin, prescription medications, and drug paraphernalia,” the press release said.

Because Cruz had swallowed an unknown quantity of drugs and medication while trying to run from police, he was immediately taken to Mesa View Regional Hospital in Mesquite, according to the press release.

Following a medical evaluation, Cruz was transported to the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas and booked on felony charges for possession of heroin, possession of a controlled substance with the intention of sale, and possession of a schedule IV controlled substance. He was additionally booked on charges of drug paraphernalia possession and resisting arrest.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
