WASHINGTON COUNTY – A man killed Friday in an ATV rollover at Welcome Springs in the Beaver Dam Wash National Conservation Area has been identified by authorities.

The man killed in the ATV crash was Harold Stephens, 79, of Tremonton, Sgt. David Crouse, of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed Saturday afternoon. Stephens was in the area staying at his winter home in Littlefield, Arizona, at the time of the accident, Crouse told St. George News Friday.

Stephens had been riding with a group in the Beaver Dam Wash Conservation Area, near Utah Hill, when he left the group to explore a side canyon, Crouse said. When Stephens didn’t come back, members of the group went looking for him.

“He had gotten off trail, and the four-wheeler rolled on top of him,” Crouse said.

Stephens was reportedly already dead when the other riders found him. They called 911 using a satellite phone, and responders from the Bureau of Land Management, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, Ivins City Fire and Rescue, and Life Flight responded to the area.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
