CEDAR CITY — An Ivins man is in police custody after he was arrested Friday for driving under the influence and for possessing drugs inside the Iron County Jail.
At approximately 12:09 p.m. Friday, Iron County Sheriff’s Deputy Jake Hoyt received information that drivers were calling in with complaints about a white Dodge Caravan swerving all over Interstate 15, Hoyt said in a probable cause statement supporting the arrest. One complainant continued to follow the vehicle.
At mile marker 56, Hoyt witnessed the van in question pass him, along with the concerned citizen and another driver pointing toward the Caravan, Hoyt said in the statement.
When Hoyt initiated a traffic stop, the van first stopped in the middle of the Exit 57 off-ramp before continuing on to the bottom of the off-ramp and stopping again.
“I told the driver multiple times to show me both hands out the window,” Hoyt said in the statement. “He failed to do so.”
The driver pulled the car forward once more, taking it off the road. The driver then complied with the officer’s request.
Upon making contact with the driver, whom he identified as 24-year-old Nelson Tom, Hoyt discovered Tom’s driver’s license was currently revoked. Tom tested negative for alcohol on a portable breath test, but he failed to pass field sobriety tests.
Tom was placed under arrest for driving under the influence, unsafe lane travel and driving on a revoked driver’s license. He was booked into the Iron County Jail.
Inside the Caravan Tom had been driving, investigators found multiple spoons with burnt residue on them, syringe caps and pieces of balloons, Hoyt said. While at the jail, Tom told a deputy he had used benzodiazepine, Klonopin and oxycodone.
During a strip-search at the jail, a deputy discovered multiple items in Tom’s rectal area, Hoyt said.
“A spoon with burnt residue on it, a syringe and a towel with a black substance consistent with black tar heroin was retrieved,” Hoyt said. “I responded to the jail, and along with medical personnel, we transported Mr. Tom to Valley View Medical Center for clearance.”
While at the hospital, the deputy also discovered a pink balloon between Tom’s toes, the statement said. Tom said the balloon contained Suboxone.
Additional charges were filed against Tom following his arrest. He was additionally charged with one third-degree felony for possession of a controlled substance; three class B misdemeanors for possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence and driving on a revoked license; and a class C misdemeanor for failure to stay in one lane.
Tom’s bail for release is set at $12,500, cash or bond. According to court documents, he remains in police custody at the time of this publication.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

I stayed at a cheap hotel in Detroit last year. The towel there had a brown tar like substance on it as well, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t heroin.

This kid has been a little jerk for weeks, and suddenly right before Christmas is presenting this false front of being a caring person.
I think the kid is a total nut case with issues with his/her gender, his general identity, and with his mother. Just an educated guess though about all that.
I have no clue who most of the people posting on here are. I’m one of the few who uses his real name instead of some silly fake name (pseudonym, for those who understand “big words”). And, actually, I don’t care.
For the person with the addicted son, I hope he gets some serious “inside treatment”, meaning in an institution. And that he gets it. That’s what it took for my daughter to get off of 12 years of meth. In jail in another state. It IS possible, but as a recovering alcoholic, I know how tough it is for the harder drugs than booze. It takes tough love. They must be kicked out, not coddled at home, etc. We took one son who wanted “help” with his problems to the Rescue Mission. Said “see ya, call us some day”. Tough love is tough to do, but vital. The son got clean too and is now a productive man with children and a job.
Is your “tough love” part of the reason your kid was an addict for 12 years maybe?

This guy is my son who has been battling heroin addiction for over 7yrs without overcoming his addiction this has been a vicious cycle for our family. I am glad he didn’t kill anyone out there on the road including himself. I know there will be many more comments to come. I have a younger son who I pray will be able to stay strong through all this. Truth to that. The best thing for druggies is to lock them up to keep them away from drugs.

It amazes me that DUIs and paraphernalia and even some other drug charges are less than other charges such as dr. Shopping, which isn’t a real charge: only in Utah
I was thinking it is kind of odd that the police would release such personal info as to what items were found in a suspect’s rectum, as if the rectal search in it’s own right wasn’t intrusive enough. This guy is going to get made fun of for a long time by his buddies(if he’s got any)…
