SANTA CLARA — Dixie Direct Saving Guide CEO Tony Chambers presented a $6,707.50 check to Santa Clara Elementary School Thursday morning and awarded three students with Apple iPad Minis for selling Dixie Direct Savings Guidebooks.
Dixie Direct, an 18-year-old southern Utah-based advertising agency, has provided fundraising opportunities for students within Washington County schools as they sell Dixie Direct Savings Guide books. This year, however, is the first year that the agency has awarded prizes to students for their selling efforts, Chambers said.

While some high school teams and clubs have participated in the Dixie Direct fundraiser, Chambers said elementary school students have always been the most involved. Each book costs $35 and for every book sold, $17.50 of the sale is given back to that school, club or team. The Santa Clara Elementary School student body sold approximately 380 books, which totaled more than $12,000, Chambers said.
“We only have 435 students at our school, so to sell almost 400 books for our school, it is great to have such a high percentage and I feel so good about that,”Santa Clara Elementary School Principal Nadine Hancey said.
The money the school raised will be used for needs that cannot be met from other budgets, Hancey said, including teacher incentives, student incentives for positive reinforcement, field trips, and technology costs.
“It’s just a wonderful gift of money that we can use to help our school,” she added.
Besides the financial incentive for the school, each student who participates receives a prize.
The students who sell two, five or 10 Dixie Direct Savings Guide books receive prizes which include McDonald’s Happy Meals, Carl’s Jr. Cool Kids Meals, Fiesta Fun Bumper Boat Pass, Laser Mania passes and more, according to a Dixie Direct Savings Guide selling packet.
For a school that sells more than 300 books, a first, second, and third place prize is also awarded to the top three student sellers. First place is an iPad Mini, second place is a Kindle Fire, and third place is a $50 Visa gift card. Also within each school, the class that sells the most books gets a free pizza party from Domino’s Pizza. The winning class at Santa Clara Elementary this year was Aarron Bradbury’s fifth grade class.
“This is the first of 30 schools this year that we will be doing something similar for,” Chambers said. “We will present the other schools with prizes in January.”
Santa Clara Elementary School kindergartener Milo Ence, and fifth graders Amanda Lanz and Gracie Sullivan were the top three winners for selling the most books at their school.
All three students tied for first place, and received iPad Minis. All three winning students said they are happy to have an iPad Mini to play on; and that they sold the majority of the Dixie Direct Savings Guide books to family, friends, and neighbors.
“I heard there was a prize and (the books) were easy to sell because everyone likes them,” Sullivan said.
Chambers encourages the general public to buy Dixie Direct Savings Guide books through a school nearby and support the students.
“Even if you don’t have a student in a school, go buy a book at the front desk,” he said. “If you live in Santa Clara, those residents can come here and buy the book and $17.50 of the sale stays with the school.”
Last year, Dixie Direct raised approximately $200,000 for the local schools, Chambers said, and is on track to raise almost $280,000 this year.
