Sen. Mike Lee garners 76 percent approval from GOP voters

SALT LAKE CITY — A new poll shows Sen. Mike Lee with overwhelming support from more than three out of four likely Republican voters in Utah. The survey, conducted in the early part of December, showed that 76 percent of those most likely to vote in a Republican primary approved of the job Lee is doing, with just one in 10 having an unfavorable opinion. Sen. Orrin Hatch achieved a 72 percent favorable rating in the poll.

Among Independents who are likely to vote in the primary, 71 percent give Lee high marks and more than half of self-identified moderates approve of Lee.

Based on his present day public support, Sen. Lee would enter a Republican primary in an overwhelmingly strong position,” said the pollsters at Basswood Research, the firm that conducted the survey.

“The survey does track with what we’re hearing and seeing on the ground,” said Brian Phillips, spokesman for Lee. “Senator Lee has been a principled, consistent and influential voice for Republicans and conservatives in Utah and around the country. And with Republicans taking over the majority next year, and with Lee becoming chairman of the steering committee, he will continue to raise Utah’s voice in the national dialogue.”

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.

Getting an approval rating is easy in Utah, just say you hate Obama, claim to support religion, and you’ll defend everyone’s guns. Even Shurtleff and Swallow had approval ratings from fellow republicons.

That’s a good point on the Obama and guns…not sure about “religion” though. Nevertheless, Mike Lee is more of conservative than Shurtleff or Swallow were.

Count me in the 10% who have an “unfavorable opinion.”

yeah, great job these past four years doing nothing except shutting down the government.

I’ve had the good fortune of talking to Mike Lee. He is one of the smartest people I’ve run across and has great ideas for not only Utah but our country. I came from California where I never agreed with my government leaders, Mike Lee is very refreshing.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mike Lee at a pancake breakfast he was hosting during his campaign in Washington City. Those were some mighty fine tasting pancakes. By the way, I personally know of some of my Democrat friends who eagerly voted for Mike Lee and continue to support him…..just waiting for when they change party affiliation.

I wonder how many Utah voters will still be a fan of Mike Lee after this past weekend.

On another note, I’d like to say thank you to Mike Lee and Ted Cruz for helping to get Vivek Murthy confirmed as Surgeon General yesterday — It will be nice to have a highly qualified Surgeon General in office who will stand up to the NRA bullies!

    • Teacher December 16, 2014 at 2:13 pm

He would have been confirmed either way. Don’t kid yourself.

Another self-serving press release from Lee’s office. Lee and Senator Cruz just riled the Republican party leadership with their boorish behavior. By attempting to block Obama’s immigration order with a procedural tactic, they (unwittingly) allowed Senate votes on a bunch of Obama nominees which have been blocked until now by the Republicans.
    “Eight year olds Dude.”

  • Teacher December 16, 2014 at 2:10 pm

That is the propaganda coming out of the Republican party, which Bender apparently supports…

    • Bender December 16, 2014 at 6:22 pm

You sound confused TEACHER. Throwing your lot in with the loony Tea Party will have that effect.

  • Karen December 16, 2014 at 7:01 pm

The poll was done for Club for Growth. That says it all. Somehow I ended up on Mike Lee’s email list even though I have never asked to be on it. The one I got yesterday was a classic. Apparently when the Repubs take over the Senate in January, “we can begin to craft a new reform agenda”. I wonder how many government shut-downs, filibusters, and hold-ups of nominations that will include. I can hardly wait.
